About the book and exhibition: Video - New Media Art in the Late 20th Century is newly published book that is both an historical and theoretical introduction of video art as it developed as an art form, from its birth in the 1960’s to its present day digital and computer-based modalities. Included are introductions of historically important artists and their works. Illustrated throughout with critical texts, this publication is a platform both for the layman interested in a better understanding and appreciation of new art and for the art professional interested in exhibiting or collecting video art. The exhibition will feature important video artists working in the PRC and feature selected works that appeared in Zhu Qi's book.
About the author: Zhu Qi was born in Shanghai in 1966. He has a degree from the China Art Research Institute. Presently, he lives and works in Beijing, where he curates and writes on new generation art and artists. Exhibitions that he has curated include: ‘In the Name of Art’ in 1996; ‘A Record of Video and Photography’ in 1998. He was one of the first critics and curators in China to introduce video and digital photography in his writings and exhibitions. Recently he coined the term, ‘Post-70’s Art’ as part of his research and writing on recent art developments, culminating in the large scale exhibition he just curated titled, “Post-70s Art: A Generation Transformed by the Market.”
In addition to countless articles and essays on contemporary art, Zhu Qi’s past book publications include the Chinese language titles: Chinese Avant-Garde Photography Since 1990 and Visual Narrations and New Art.
